Health Notes from Susan the Nurse
Of Mora Valley Community Health Services:
Question: :The recent loss of electricity for over 24 hours really alerted me to the need to be prepared. Do you have ideas on preparedness?
Answer: Yes, I do. We’ve had our first snow now and need to be ready for more storms. Prepare your home for at least a 3 day survival without electricity. During a storm, conserve fuel; temporarily close off heat to less used rooms. Remember to ventilate well when using kerosene heaters/lanterns to avoid build-up of toxic fumes. Refuel kerosene heaters outside at least 3 feet from flammable objects. Have lots of water on hand as your well may require electricity to operate.
Prepare a “Winter Car Kit”: keep full gas tank; shovel; windshield scraper; battery-powered radio; flashlight; extra batteries; blanket; booster cables; emergency flares; bag of salt or sand; road maps; tow chain or rope; tire chains; mittens; fluorescent distress flag; hat; non-perishable high energy snack foods; bottled water; extra clothing & footwear; first aid kit with manual; matches; “survival” candle in a tin can; tool kit; Fix-A-Flat; gloves; umbrella.
If a blizzard traps you in your car: turn on hazard lights; hang the distress flag on your antennae; remain in your vehicle; do not set out on foot unless you can see a building nearby; when engine is running, open the window slightly for ventilation; periodically clear snow from the exhaust pipe; exercise to maintain body heat; use road maps, seat covers, and floor mats for insulation; drink fluids to avoid dehydration; be careful not o waste battery power; at night, turn on the inside light so rescuers can see you.
I hope you never need to use these ideas but I’m glad you have them in case you do.
